Episode 31: Audra Starkey - The Healthy Shift Worker
Audra Starkey (AKA The Healthy Shift Worker) is a clinical nutritionist who has been helping shift workers and organisations from around the world improve their health and wellbeing. After 21 years in the aviation industry, Audra knew first hand about the health risks of working shifts and just how little emphasis was actually being placed on mitigating these risks with a healthy diet and lifestyle. In this podcast Audra and I discuss her transition away from aviation into clinical nutrition and workplace wellness and starting her consulting business, the health risks associated with shift work and practical strategies to reduce the potential negative health consequences of this type of work.

Episode 30: Ananda Mahony - Pain Management: The Biopsychosocial Approach
Ananda Mahony (MSc Pain Management, BHSc Naturopathy) is a naturopath, lecturer and clinician with over 20 years experience. She has a special interest in the management of chronic pain and complex health conditions. When we think about pain management, our first thought is inflammation and tissue injury, however it's much more complex than that. Pain is very debilitating and significantly impacts peoples quality of life. As we know, many of the current medical interventions (such as drug therapy / surgery etc) often provide limited benefit for sufferers of chronic, non responding pain. Ananda joins me to discuss the biopsychosocial approach to pain management, how the brain plays a major role in pain perception, and provides meaningful strategies around how clinicians can help their patients manage and overcome chronic pain.

Episode 27: Dr. Christine Houghton - Vitamin Supplementation VS Food As Medicine
Can we really influence specific biochemical pathways with mega doses of single vitamins and minerals? Why have we forgotten about the food matrix and the synergistic effects of whole food, in favour of vitamin supplements? How can foods be more powerful at regulating cellular mechanisms compared to a single nutrient? Where did we start going wrong in natural medicine, why did we decide to move away from harnessing the power of food as medicine and start relying on synthetic nutritional supplements?
Dr Christine Houghton holds a PhD in Nutrigenomics and a BSc in Biochemistry from the University of Queensland as well as a Graduate Diploma in Human Nutrition from Deakin University in Victoria. She is a registered Nutritionist and Adjunct Lecturer in the School of Human Movement and Nutrition Science at the University of Queensland. Christine founded the Brisbane company, Cell-Logic which is focused toward the research and development of sulforaphane, a broccoli sprout-derived bioactive phytochemical that targets the upstream causes of disease. Dr. Christine Houghton has been a figurehead and pioneer within the natural medicine industry in Australia and is an authority in the field of nutrigenomics.
